Barbara Kohlfeld, principal at Barbara Blanchard Elementary School in Cape Girardeau, was named American Legion teacher of the year for 2014, according to a news release from the Legion.

Blanchard principal since 2000, Kohlfeld earlier was principal at May Greene Elementary School and has been a teacher in Cape Girardeau since 1981. She is a graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and the University of Missouri. She received a master's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University and a doctoral degree in education from Southern Illinois University in 1981.

Kohlfeld said in the release that her father, Robert H. Capshaw, was a member of the American Legion, having served in the military during World War II.

Dean Monahan, chairman of the Legion awards committee, said Kohlfeld will be presented with a plaque and an award of $350 at a banquet that is to take place Wednesday.
