n Jason Peters of Cape Girardeau completed a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Peters has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco.

* Justin Bader of Jackson was awarded the Cape Girardeau County Extension Council Scholarship by the Cape Girardeau County Extension. Bader is an accounting major at Southeast Missouri State University.

* The Elks foundation scholarship is accepting applications. Applications are available at the Elks lodge and online at http://elks.org/enf/scholars. The deadline for the Elks foundation scholarship is Nov. 11. All high school seniors who are U.S. citizens are eligible. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Applications can be dropped off between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Elks lodge on 639 Elks Lane, Cape Girardeau. For more information, contact Jerry Arnold at 335-9294 or jimbo4266@yahoo.com

* The Missouri Sheriffs' Association is now accepting applications for the John Dennis Scholarship. The scholarship, worth $1,000, is for high school seniors who intend to attend a Missouri college or university and pursue a career in criminal justice. Applicants must be in good standing with their school, have a good reference from their school counselor, demonstrate financial need, have a 2.0 grade-point average or higher and be involved in extracurricular activities. A paragraph detailing the student's goals for the next 10 years is also due with the application. Applications are available at http://www.mosheriffs.com, by contacting Karen Logan at karen@mosheriffs.com, calling 573-635-5925, extension 100, or writing the Missouri Sheriffs' Association and Training, 6605 Business 50 West, Jefferson City, MO 65109. Applications are due Jan. 31.
