A man was in jail Sunday after fleeing from officers after a traffic stop, the Scott County Sheriff's Department reported.

Gary Ellison Kyle, 36, fled on foot after Scott City police officer Brooks Brockmire stopped a pickup truck in which he was a passenger about 11 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Bridge and Daugherty streets in Scott City, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

Deputy Danny Finley of the Scott County Sheriff's Department, who assisted with the search, followed Kyle's tracks in the snow to a basement window in an apparent abandoned house, where he found Kyle hiding behind some plywood, the release stated.

Brockmire and a state trooper -- who helped with the search -- entered the basement, where Kyle was arrested after a short scuffle, the release stated.

This isn't the first time Kyle has tried to avoid arrest, online court records show.

In May 2013, he pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

At the time of his arrest Sunday, Kyle was wanted on outstanding warrants for drug charges in Cape Girardeau County and Howard County, Missouri, Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said in the news release Sunday afternoon.

Online court records show Kyle pleaded guilty in 2012 to unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and was sentenced to six months in jail.

In 2013, he pleaded guilty in Cape Girardeau County Circuit Court to possession of a controlled substance and was placed on five years of supervised probation.

That same year, he pleaded guilty in Howard County to forgery and possession of a controlled substance and was placed on five years of supervised probation.

Online court records show on Feb. 10, judges in both counties issued warrants for his arrest after he was accused of violating the terms of his probation.

According to the news release Sunday, Kyle told police he had no permanent address.

In January, he told a Howard County judge he had moved from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis because Cape Girardeau had "too many issues," online court records show. It was not clear what those issues were.

Scott City police likely will file additional drug charges against Kyle as a result of his arrest Sunday, Walter said in the news release.

In the release Sunday, Walter said the driver of the pickup truck also was arrested but was not being identified, pending filing of formal charges.
