Cape Girardeau public schools

In fall 2002 the new $20.5 million Central High School opened at 1000 S. Silver Springs Road. The sprawling facility is located just east of I-55 and south of the new Highway 74 bridge route.

Directly south of the high school is the new Cape Girardeau Area Career and Technology Center at 1080 Silver Springs Road. It opened to students in fall 2001.

Blanchard Elementary, a contemporary school at Sprigg and Bertling streets, opened to students during the 1999-2000 school year.

Recent major renovations have been completed for all elementary schools and for Central Junior High, which in 2002 moved into the former senior high school building at 205 Caruthers.

The superintendent of Cape Girardeau Public Schools is Dr. Dave Scala.

Besides the public schools, Cape Girardeau has outstanding parochial schools. Catholic grade schools offering courses in grades kindergarten through eighth include St. Mary's Cathedral School and St. Vincent de Paul School.

Notre Dame Regional High School opened in a new building in 1998. Located along Route K on the west side of I-55, it has grades nine through 12.

Trinity Lutheran School has students from preschool through the eighth grade. Cape Christian School serves preschool through the seventh grade, and Eagle Ridge Christian School teaches preschool through high school.

Saxony Lutheran High School opened its doors for the first time in 2000. It moved into its new location near the Fruitland exit on I-55, County Road 601 in 2004.

Other schools of interest are Parkview State School for the Severely Handicapped, St. Mary's Early Education Center, Christian School for the Young Years, Headstart, Cape Girardeau Montessori School, Early Childhood Center and many preschools.

Getting children ready for school and schools ready for children is the goal of Educare. Educare, located at 301 N. Clark Street in Cape Girardeau, is funded through the Missouri State Department of Social Services.

Educare is a comprehensive school readiness program available at no cost to all families in the Cape Girardeau area with children birth through 5 years. The program is voluntary and empowers families to work with young children to ensure that all children are ready for school.

Development screening is offered for children through the age of 5. A Parents as Teachers in Home Program is available for those with children ages 3 through 5.

Educare offers school readiness/transition workshops, a child care newsletter, child care provider network and accreditation assistance. Kindergarten readiness workshops help prepare children for school. Kindergarten readiness profiles help prepare the schools for the children. For more information, call 651-9171.

Franklin Elementary School, 215 N. Louisiana is in central Cape Girardeau. Rhonda Dunham is the principal and the school's phone number is 335-5456.

Cape Girardeau parochial schools

Notre Dame Regional High School, is at 265 Notre Dame Drive, which is two miles west of I-55 on Route K. Brother David Anthony Migliorino is the principal and the school's phone number is 335-6772.

St. Mary's Cathedral School is at 210 S. Sprigg in central Cape Girardeau. Carol Strattman is the principal and the school's phone number is 335-3840.

Trinity Lutheran School, at 55 N. Pacific is in the central part of the city. The principal is Terry Fark and the school's phone number is 334-1068.

Eagle Ridge Christian School has students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. It is located at 4210 Route K. The principal is Janice Margrabe and the school's phone number is 339-1335.

Jackson public schools

Jackson Public Schools are beginning a new era of growth. In August 2005, voters in Jackson approved a $19.8 million bond issue that will pay for renovations over the next few years. The campus, currently made up of several different buildings, will ultimately be housed under one roof. A new library will be built, along with a commons/cafeteria area, events center and a new classroom building. Other parts of the existing campus will be renovated.

R.O. Hawkins Junior High School is at 210 N. West Lane and the principal is Corey Crosnoe. The phone number is 243-9533.

Jackson Middle School is at 1651 W. Independence and the principal is Dr. Rodney Pensel. The phone number is 243-9543.

Orchard Drive Elementary at 1402 Orchard Drive has grades first through third. The principal is Clay Vangilder and the phone number is 243-9555.

West Lane Elementary at 338 West Lane has grades fourth and fifth. The principal is Cynthia Matthew and the phone number is 243-9565.

South Elementary is at 1701 S. Hope St. The principal is Bonnie Knowlan and the phone number is 243-9575.

Immaculate Conception Catholic Grade School is at 308 S. Hope and the principal is Tami Nenninger. The phone number is 243-5013.

St. Paul Lutheran Grade School is at 211 S. Russell and the principal is Delvin Meyr. There is also a kindergarten. The phone number is 243-5360.

Oak Ridge

The Oak Ridge School District covers 83 square miles in the northwest portion of Cape Girardeau County. The schools are located at 4198 State Highway E. The elementary principal is Gerald Landewee. The high school principal is Paul Lynch. The superintendent is Cheri Fuemmeler. The phone number is 266-3218.

Delta

Delta Schools, about 15 miles west of Cape Girardeau, are at 324 Liberty St. Mary Ann Tierney is the elementary principal and Nathan Crowden is high school principal. The superintendent is Tom Allen and the phone number is 794-2511.

Chaffee

Chaffee Schools are undergoing some improvement through a $1.48 million bond issue district voters approved in November 2004. Under construction is a new elementary activity center which will include a cafeteria, lobby and space for events. The building will be separate from the current elementary facility and will be used for physical education classes during the school day when it is finished.

The superintendent of Chaffee Schools is Dr. Arnold Bell. The high school is located at 517 W. Yoakum and the elementary school is at 408 Elliott.

Scott City

New Hamburg and Kelso

Oran

The superintendent of Oran Schools is Mitchell Wood and the phone number is 262-3345. Elementary principal is William Fredenburg. High school and middle school principal is Travis Spane.

Sikeston

Sikeston boasts affiliation with two higher education centers, one through Southeast Missouri State University that has been in operation five years. The newest higher education center is affiliated with Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Sikeston Public Schools consists on a high school, a junior high, a middle school, five elementary schools and one kindergarten center. The superintendent is Stephen Borgsmiller. The principal of the senior high school is Tom Williams. The phone number to the board of education office is 472-2581.

Scott County Central is located six miles north of Sikeston on Highway 61 and consists of a high school and an elementary school. The superintendent is Jo Anne Northern. The high school principal is Hershel Beckwith and the elementary principal is Lori Scheeter. The phone number is 471-2686.

Perryville

The Perryville Public Schools are on 116 acres at College and Edward streets. The superintendent is Beverly Schonoff. The phone number to the board of education office is 547-7500.

The high school principal is Dr. Steven Wolf. The elementary school principal is Sharon Hayden. The middle school principal is Velda Haertling.

Perryville Area Career and Technology Center offers vocational classes. It is located at 326 Edwards St. and the phone number is 547-2542. Principal is David Toney.

St. Vincent Catholic Schools are also in Perryville. The superintendent is Rev. Kevin Fausz. The high school is at 210 S. Waters and the principal is Lisa Best. The phone number is 547-2560. Immanuel Lutheran School at 225 W. South St. in Perryville has a preschool and kindergarten through eighth grade. The principal is Bill Unzicker and the phone number is 547-6161.

In the southeastern section of Perry County, the Altenburg School District educates students in grades kindergarten through eight. Richard Hoffman is superintendent. Students attend high school, depending on where they live, at Perryville, Jackson or Oak Ridge. The phone number is 824-5857.

Private schools in the area include St. Marcus Elementary in Biehle, Concordia Trinity Lutheran in Altenberg and Frohna, Salem Lutheran School in Farrar and St. Joseph's in Apple Creek.

Bollinger County

North Elementary School at 10730 Highway W in Fruitland has 265 students in grades first through fifth. The principal is David Gross and the phone number is 243-9590.

Gordonville Attendance Center on Highway Z in Gordonville has 55 students in grades first through third. The principal is Andrew Rogers and the phone number is 243-9580.

Millersville Attendance Center on Route BB in Millersville has 74 students. The principal is Andrew Rogers and the phone number is 243-9585.

Vocational and training schools

The Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center serves as many as 580 secondary students and more than 9,000 adults in areas ranging from one-year skilled vocational programs to in-service events and seminars. Rich Payne is the director of the school and Dean Whitlow is coordinator of adult and community education.

Challenging courses are available in the technology center's secondary program. They include auto mechanics, air conditioning, auto body and fender, business education, clerical practice, cooperative education, data processing, drafting, electronics, food services, graphic arts, health occupations, horticulture, secretarial practice, building trades and welding, and desk-top publishing.

Courses available in the post-secondary program include modern office technology, auto mechanics, practical nursing, electronics, refrigeration and air conditioning, respiratory therapy, welding, self-improvement training, adult basic education, food service, paramedics and emergency medical technician training.

The center also offers a two-week, free workplace readiness credential to simulate an employee's probationary period while on the job. Topics covered include making professional impressions, getting along with co-workers, decision making and problem solving, workplace safety, customer service, developing a resume, job interviews, good workplace habits and other work-related subjects.

For individuals who want personal enrichment, the center offers such classes as scrapbooking, chess, golf basics, foreign languages, home decoration and repair and computer-related courses.

Post-secondary students also have the option of attending Metro Business College, 1732 N. Kingshighway. Metro is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools.

Potential students can apply to the business and computer specialist program, medical specialist program, massage therapy program, information processing and computer operator program, medical administrative assistant, medical secretary and administrative assistant programs.

Financial assistance is available to qualifying candidates.

The programs are designed around a philosophy of individualized learning and quality instruction. Job placement and career counseling services are available to graduates, although Metro does not guarantee job placement.

The Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences was originally opened in 1928 as the Southeast Missouri Hospital School of Nursing, and had been closed since the Depression when economic hardships forced it to close. It reopened in 1995 responding to a demand for nurse training, and in 1999, it expanded its educational offerings to individuals who do not have prior nursing education. In 1999 it changed to its current name. In 2002, the school added a radiology technology program which will become an associate degree program beginning with the class of 2006.

The not-for-profit school is dedicated to responding to the needs of the community and region through the development of programs designed to prepare qualified health care professionals in continuing in high-demand fields. The school is accredited by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

Programs offered include the associate degree of nursing program, a bridge program from Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse, Certificate Radiologic and Technology program, and a Surgical Technology program.
