NEW YORK -- Planning on giving mom the night off for Mother's Day? It's a nice thought, but, remember, the family still has to eat.

The May issue of FamilyFun magazine offers a recipe for a no-bake cake, offering children the opportunity to do some cooking without turning on an oven. That makes it a doubly sweet treat for mom.

* Slice a 10 3/4-ounce pound cake (which can be bought at any grocery store) into several horizontal slices, about an inch thick.

* Make a 3-ounce box of instant pudding according to the package directions. Mix the pudding with 1 cup of whipped topping.

* Chop some fruit. FamilyFun suggests 2 bananas and 4 large strawberries.

* Layer the cake, fruit and a little less than half the pudding mixture in a loaf pan. Then top the cake with the remaining pudding.

* Put the cake in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. When it's chilled, decorate it -- perhaps with more strawberries and mint sprigs.

* Squeeze on a greeting with chilled chocolate syrup.

* Serve to mom.
