Everything Presbyterian -- that's what local churches are celebrating this week in honor of Presbyterian Heritage Sunday.

Here's a look back at the history of Southeast Missouri Presbyterian churches.

First Presbyterian Church, Cape Girardeau

The 171-year-old church was organized March 1, 1835.. The first worship services were held in the dining room of the Washington Female Seminiary. The first church building was constructed in 1854 and located at the present site at the corner of Lorimier Street and Broadway.

In 2004, the church completed a $1 million renovation that included better access for disabled members, an atrium and more classroom space. The Rev. Paul Kabo is pastor.

First Presbyterian Church, Jackson

Jackson's First Presbyterian Church was founded in 1864. Worship services were held in the homes of members until 1870. The first church was built at the corner of W. Adams and S. Russell Streets. The church has been at its present location at 206 E. Washington St. since 1940.

The Rev. Grant Gillard is pastor.

At local churches

First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau will hold a special service beginning at 10:45 a.m. that highlights the heritage of the Presbyterian Church. The event includes special bagpipe music.
