In a rivalry that has existed for 100 years, mutual animosity is probably not unexpected between Cape Girardeau and Jackson's high school football teams.

But even with that in mind, say local religious leaders, there is still room for God in that relationship.

"Football and faith don't always mix, and we're not really mixing them now," said Patrick Tankersly, student ministries pastor at Cape Bible Chapel. "We're just saying some things are bigger than football."

For the second year in a row, Tankersly's church is helping sponsor a "Celebrate the Game" event that brings together members of both high school football teams before they play each other in October.

Last year, some 300 people -- including players and parents -- attended. This year, in honor of the game being hosted by Jackson High School, the event will be held at First Baptist Church in Jackson.

Tankersly said the event brings common ground to the players.

"It's obviously Christian in orientation, but it's not a big worship service so much as a celebration," he said. "It brings energy to something that already has a lot of energy."

There will be a video about each team, music and prayers for players' health and safety. Randy Sawyer, a former all-district running back, will be the guest speaker.

The event starts with a tailgate party for players at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the church in Jackson. The actual celebration begins at 7:30 p.m. Tankersly said he hopes the program will grow each year, perhaps large enough to feature professional football players as guest speakers one day.
