Women's retreat will be held Feb. 10

"A 13-13 Kind of Love" is a one-day retreat that will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Drury Lodge. The women of Hanover Lutheran Church invite women of the area to participate. The retreat will teach about God's love and love for others based on Corinthians 13:13. Dianna Bikel, a handbell soloist from Collinsville, Ill., will perform. Jean Hoffman of Battle Creek, Iowa, will speak on loving the flock. Seating is limited, so early registration is important. Deadline for registration is Jan. 30. Men's wild game supper planned in Dongola

The Clear Creek Baptist Association will hold a men's wild game potluck supper at 6 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist church of Dongola, Ill. Men are asked to bring a wild game dish or other food to share. The Rev. Thomas Foeller, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Anna, Ill., will be the featured speaker.

Good Shepherd chapel celebrates 40 years

The Rev. Ray Mirly, president of the Missouri District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, will be the special anniversary speaker at 10:30 a.m. Sunday when Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel, 1904 West Cape Rock Drive, celebrates its 40th anniversary. Following the worship service there will be a banquet and brief program. The church's first worship service was held Jan. 1, 1967, in the basement of a house across the street from the present church. Since its founding Good Shepherd had three building programs, in 1968, 2000 and 2005. In 40 years, the congregation has been served by four pastors: the Revs. Walter Loeber, Alan Bachert, William Matzat and Barry Pfanstiel.

Special evangelistic meetings are underway at the Salvation Army, 702 Good Hope St. Maj. Ed Wilson from Minnesota and his Band of Praise will be at today's 7:30 p.m. service, and will also be at the 11 a.m. service Sunday. Lunch will follow along with a short meeting after lunch. The public is invited.

McClure Baptist Church hosts pastor candidate

David Marshall, pastor candidate at McClure Baptist Church, will speak at the morning and evening services on Jan. 21 and 27, as well as the Wednesday night services each of those weeks. Brother Bill Joyce retired as pastor Dec. 31, and is serving as interim pastor until a new pastor is found. David and his wife, Nina, are former members of the church, and have added two children to their family since they moved several years ago. The public is invited. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m., followed by morning worship at 11. Sunday evening worship is at 6 p.m., and Wednesday evening worship is at 7 p.m.

Prayer for Christian Unity held this week

The week of Prayer for Christian Unity is Monday through Friday. The Jackson Ministerial Alliance will sponsor services at New McKendree United Methodist Church beginning at 7 a.m. each day, with a short devotion and a time for prayer. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

New member dinner set at First Christian

First Christian Church, 2411 Abbey Road, will have a new member dinner at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in honor of members who have joined the church during the past year, and those who plan to join soon.
