Ceramics exhibit opens at arts council

"Crossing Paths: Ceramic Artists/ Faculty and Students" opens today at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

The exhibition is composed of pottery, vessels and sculpture by artists from Missouri, Illinois, Alabama and Texas.

A reception for the artists will be held in the galleries from 5 to 8 p.m. today. A gallery talk by the artists will be presented at 6:30 p.m.

The exhibition is curated by Amy Kephart, a member of the art department faculty at Southeast Missouri State University. It explores the influences artist/professors and students have on each other.

A new exhibit of work by the Visual Arts Cooperative will be displayed. The window galleries will present works by Dr. Jean Chapman, Glenda Manche and Megan Thrower through Sept. 15.

The galleries are located at 30 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Admission is free.

Auditions for 'Same Time, Next Year'

Auditions for the River City Players upcoming production of "Same Time, Next Year" will be held Saturday and Sunday at Port Cape restaurant.

The Bernard Slade play has roles for one male and one female. Positions also are available for sound and lights, wardrobe and stage crew. Auditions will be from 1 to 3 p.m. both days.

The play will be presented Oct. 24-25, 30-31 and Nov. 1.

Still on the Hill in two concerts

The Arkansas bluegrass band Still on the Hill will perform twice in Cape Girardeau next week. The duo play at 7 p.m. Thursday as part of the Underberg House Concert Series. Phone 334-7692 for information.

The following night, Still on the Hill will perform for Tunes at Twilight at the Common Pleas Courthouse Gazebo in Cape Girardeau. The 7 p.m. concert is free.

Broken Grass at River City Yacht Club

The Carbondale, Ill., alternative bluegrass band Broken Grass will perform Thursday at Port Cape's River City Yacht Club in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The show begins at 9 p.m. Admission is $3 for those 21 and over, $5 for those 18-21.

Archaeology Discovery Day Sept. 13

Archaeology Discovery Day will be presented Sept. 13 at the University Museum. Interactive stations and touch tables will be set up for guests to learn more about archaeology. Guest also can make their own pottery.

The event is free and open to the public. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. The event is planned for children ages 7-12, but all ages are welcome. One adult for every two children is recommended.

In addition, University Museum curator of collections Jim Phillips will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the museum. The free lecture is titled "Reinterpreting a 19th Century Collection for a 21st Century Audience: A Look at the Thomas Beckwith Collection."

The collection includes ceramic vessels and effigy fragments excavated by Beckwith from mounds on his property in Southeast Missouri.

Workshops on herbal teas Sept. 20

WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- Master gardener Denise Berryhill will present two workshops titled "Herbal Teas: A Step Back in Thyme" Sept. 20 at Wickliffe Mounds Research Center.

Berryhill will teach participants about the heritage of growing and harvesting herbs for teas and blending teas.

The morning workshop will be from 10 a.m. to noon, with the afternoon workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Enrollment is limited to 12 in each workshop. The fee is $10.

Saxophonist to perform in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman will make his first performance at Jazz at the Bistro Oct. 8-11.

Known for a style that jumps between R&B and jazz, Newman started out as a member or the Ray Charles Band, and in 1959 began his solo career. He has played with such stars as Herbie Mann, Aretha Franklin, Ellis Marsalis and Natalie Cole.
