Central takes first at Physics Olympics

Cape Girardeau Central High School took first place in the annual Physics Olympics held March 19 at Southeast Missouri State University. Bell City High School placed second. Oak Ridge High School placed third.

Central high school students recognized

Cape Girardeau Central High School students Claire Segar and Jared Roop have been selected for the 2007 Missouri Scholars 100 recognition by the Missouri Association of Secondary Principals. The program honors the top 100 academic students in the state, based primarily on a formula using the student's grade point average and ACT or SAT score.

The following area students were winners in the History Day District 9 competition earlier this month at Southeast Missouri State University. They are listed by category.

  • Elementary Exhibit Individual -- Julia Dembowski, second place for "Anne Frank," Bell City School District in Bell City, Mo.
  • Junior Paper -- Natalie Williams, third place for "A Dream of Freedom," St. Mary Cathedral School in Cape Girardeau; Austin Cook, second place for "Exploration or Exploitation," St. Ambrose School in Chaffee, Mo.; Ryan Long, first place for "The Life of a Volcano Brings Death to a City," St. Ambrose School.

  • Junior Performance Group -- Kristyn Sanders, Faith Reynolds and Lizzie Nussbaum, first place for "Tragedy and Triumph of the Elizabethan Era," Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School.
  • Junior Media Group -- Rachel Reischman, Sadie Schaefer, Courtney Scheeter and Emma Wessel, first place for "An American Moses: The Road to Freedom," St. Ambrose School.

Additional honor roll students named

Delta Elementary School announced the names of five additional first-grade students who made the third-quarter honor roll. They are Cassie Eichhorn, Trenton Henson, Adam Hodge, Joseph Landewee and Kim Nettles.

Scholarships

  • Kimberlee Rothenberger and Kayleigh Harris, both of Jackson, have been awarded President's scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. Harris also received a Missouri Leadership Award for the 2007 to 2008 academic year. Rothenberger, a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the daughter of Bric and Marlene Rothenberger. Harris, a senior at Jackson High School, is the daughter of Scott and Judy Harris.
  • Whitney Schreckenberg of Whitewater and Jessica Eftink of Benton, Mo., have been awarded Missouri Assessment Program and Missouri Leadership scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. Schreckenberg also received a Girls State Leadership Award. A senior at Delta High School, Schreckenberg is the daughter of Virgil and Carolyn Schreckenberg. Eftink, a senior at Kelly High School, is the daughter of Dan and Lisa Eftink.
