Student to intern with Southeast Missourian

Michelle Felter, a senior at the University of Missouri in Columbia, will begin an internship at the Southeast Missourian on Thursday to experience how a non-metropolitan newspaper operates. A graduate of Thomas Kelly High School in Benton, Mo., Felter is majoring in news-editorial journalism with a minor in political science. Felter and other students from the University of Missouri School of Journalism are visiting community newspapers across the nation as part of a community journalism class. At Mizzou, Felter works as a teaching assistant in the production area of the Columbia Missourian, a daily morning newspaper in Columbia, and is the editor of MiniMo, the Columbia Missourian's weekly Newspapers in Education supplement. She is also a journalism ambassador for the school, and has spent the past three summers interning at the Standard Democrat in Sikeston, Mo. Felter plans to graduate with honors in May.

Tanksley to represent SLU at legal competition

Nicolette Tanksley, a native of Cape Girardeau County, was chosen to represent St. Louis University School of Law as a member of the Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court team. The legal competition was held by the American Intellectual Property law Association and involves cutting-edge issues in patent and copyright law. Tanksley is scheduled to graduate in May with a juris doctorate from St. Louis University.

Michael Bachmann of Perryville, Mo., and Sarah Pfeiffer and Todd Aufdenberg, both of Jackson, are among 30 high school sophomores statewide selected to participate in the 20th class of the Missouri Agribusiness Academy. Bachmann attends the Perryville Area Career and Technology Center. Pfeiffer and Aufdenberg are students at Jackson High School. The Missouri Department of Agriculture annually sponsors the academy to acquaint students with career opportunities in agriculture. The students are selected through a competitive written application and oral interview process.

n Taylor Myer of Jackson and Valerie Gibbons of Scott City received scholarships from the Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences Board of Trustees. Myer, the daughter of Keith and Faye Myer, is pursuing an associate's degree in nursing. Gibbons also has been awarded a President's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University. She is the daughter of Lawrence and Sandra Gibbons, is pursuing an associate's degree in radiologic technology.

  • Nathan Jones of Thebes, Ill., has been awarded a Regional Achievement Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007 to 2008 academic year. A senior at Egyptian High School in Tamms, Ill., he is the son of Bobby Jones of Olive Branch, Ill., and Tammy Clutts of Thebes.
  • Albert Horn of Whitewater, Mo., and Nora Glasser of Kelso, Mo., have been awarded President's scholarships and Missouri Assessment Program scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University. Horn also received a Boys State Leadership Award. Glasser received a Girls State Leadership Award. Horn, a senior at Delta High School, is the son of Tom and Diana Horn. Glasser, a senior at Scott City High School, is the daughter of Wilfred and Karen Glasser.
  • Laura Hermsdorfer of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a President's Plus Scholarship and a Missouri Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University. A senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, she is the daughter of Paul and Jean Hermsdorfer.
  • Rachael Williams and Cassie Bennett, both of Cape Girardeau, Phillip Gramlisch of Jackson, Blake Dirnberger of Benton, Mo., and Diane Gunzenhauser of Chaffee, Mo., have been awarded Missouri Assessment Program scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. Williams and Bennett are seniors at Cape Girardeau Central High School. Williams is the daughter of Tim Williams and Shellie Sebastian. Bennett is the daughter of Earl and Dara Bennett. Gramlisch, a senior at Jackson High School, is the son of David and Patricia Gramlisch. Dirnberger, a senior at Scott City High School, is the son of Kenny and LaVerne Dirnberger. Gunzenhauser, a senior at Chaffee High School, is the daughter of Paul Gunzenhauser of Chaffee and Brenda Diede of Phoenix, Ariz.
  • Phillip DeCoursey of Jackson, Cassandra Jackson of Benton, Mo., Keith Holland of Thebes, Ill., and Carissa Englishbee of Millersville have been awarded Regents' scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. DeCoursey and Jackson also received Missouri Assessment Program scholarships. DeCoursey, a senior at Jackson High School, is the son of Dr. Ken and Mrs. Brenda DeCoursey. Jackson, a senior at Kelly High School, is the daughter of LaDonna Jackson of Benton and James Jackson of Cape Girardeau. Holland, a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, is the son of Connie Damron of Thebes and John Holland of Cairo, Ill. Englishbee, a senior at Jackson High School, is the daughter of James and Brenda Englishbee.
  • Juli Carron of Jackson has been awarded President's Plus and Missouri Assessment Program scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. A senior at Jackson High School, she is the daughter of Bob and Kay Carron.
