KRCU 90.90 FM gets 'The Blues'

"The Blues," a 13-part documentary series by Public Radio International, will begin airing at 8 p.m. Saturday on KRCU 90.9 FM.

The series will chronicle the music from its West African originals to today. The series is hosted by two-time Grammy winner Keb' Mo'. It includes interview with B.B. King, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bonnie Raitt along with performances by Taj Mahal, the Mississippi All-Stars, Shemekia Copeland and Rory Block.

'Standing Ovation' concert Sunday

"Standing Ovation," the Southeast Missouri Music Academy's annual benefit concert, will be presented at 5 p.m. Sunday in Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau.

The concert will feature the premier of "Go, Lovely Rose," a composition by academy student Catherine Hayward.

Tickets are $7 and are available at the door.

Auditions for Christmas play Monday, Tuesday

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Open auditions for "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," a play based on the popular children's book, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Market House Theatre's Studio Theatre.

A large cast ages 6 through adults is needed.

Jackson Band Festival Tuesday

The 59th annual Jackson Band Festival will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a parade through uptown Jackson.

The bands will perform at the football stadium at 6:30 p.m. Admission for that performance is $2 for adults and $1 for students.

High school bands participating are Advance, Cape Central, Charleston, Chaffee, Delta, Jackson, Meadow Heights, Oak Ridge, Scott City, Perryville, St. Vincent's of Perryville, Valle of Ste. Genevieve and Woodland. The Southeast Missouri State University Golden Eagles Marching Band will give a special performance.

Watercolor exhibition at Ullin

ULLIN, Ill. -- Watercolors by Kris Killman are on display through October at Shawnee Community College.

The exhibition area is in Building H, just off the Atrium.

Arts center to offer classes in Scott City

The Schock Community Arts Center in Scott City will begin offering classes this fall in art, poetry, and French language and culture.

Youth art classes will be taught Sunday afternoons from Oct. 12 to Nov. 9. A painting class will be taught Tuesdays from Oct. 14 to Nov. 11. A painting and collage class will be taught on Thursdays from Oct. 16 to Nov. 13.

A class in French language and culture will be taught from Oct. 15 to Nov. 12.

Classes are $15 per week. The first 10 people to register will be able to attend for $10 per week.

All classes except the youth art class are for ages 16 and up.

Bridges exhibition at University Museum

"Jane Hinton: Bridges," a next exhibit at the Southeast Missouri State Univeristy Museum, opens Oct. 10.

A reception for the artist will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10. Hinton will present a gallery talk at 5 p.m.

Hinton is a Toronto photographer who has taken pictures of bridges throughout Europe and North America.

The show will remain at the museum through Nov. 16.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.-- From staff reports

'Full Tilt' dance auditions Oct. 12

Auditions for the annual "Full Tilt" dance showcase at Southeast Missouri State University will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 12.

Auditions will be held in Room 210 at Parker Dance Studio. No prior experience is required. Those auditioning should dress in dance or workout clothing and either dance shoes or no shoes.

Duo flute recital Oct. 12

Flutists Paul Thompson and Jessica Terry will present a duo flute recital Oct. 12 at Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau.

Thompson is a flute instructor at Southeast Missouri State University. Terry is a student at the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory. She is a recent winner of the Missouri Music Teachers National Association District Competition.

They will be joined by Matt Yount on piano, Mary Miller on harpsichord and Kirk Miller on cello.

The duet program will include "Trisonata" by J.S. Bach, Hindemith's "Canonic Sonatina" for two flutes and the "Duettino Americain" by Franz Doppler. Terry will perform Ibert's "Piece for Unaccompanied Flute," and Thompson will premiere "Atacameno Eluwun," a work for solo flute and tape by Dr. Robert Fruehwald, a professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University.

The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $7 general, $6 for Southeast faculty, staff and senior citizens and $5 for students in advance. Phone the Performing Arts Box Office at 651-2265 for information.

'Hallow-Wedding' Oct. 10 at Six Flags

ST. LOUIS -- Twenty-five couples will "tie the noose" in a marriage ceremony Oct. 10 at Six Flags St. Louis.

The event begins the first weekend of Fright Fest at the amusement park. Fright Fest continues through Nov. 2.

The first-ever "Hallow-Wedding" in 2002 united 17 couples in a ceremony that included a candlelight procession, dead flower bouquets, wedding hearses and a ghoulish minister.

Other Fright Fest events include Fearanoia, an interactive survival game, a snake show, spooky storytelling, a Halloween musical and the Terror Train.

Fright Fest hours are 6-midnight Fridays, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sundays. For information, phone (636) 938-4800.
