Decorating a house means walking a fine line between being tasteful and boring, artistic and garish. The homeowners at 2129 Yorktown in Cape Girardeau seemed to have found just the right balance in their decorating style.

The ranch-style house has interesting architecture features that set it apart from others in the neighborhood. The house has varying roof and ceiling lines, twin arches at its entrance and Palladian-style windows that preserves the building's classic beginnings.

Outside, the house's yard is attractive and can be easily maintained. The same is true of the interior of this house. Gleaming hardwood floors give the house a rich look, but shouldn't require excessive maintenance.

The dining area and living room are separated by architectural columns and beams. Light, creamy mocha walls are subtle, yet give a feeling of warmth. A modern brass and glass pendulum light fixture is the center of the dining area. A floral border gives just the right shot of color to the walls.

The living room also features hardwood floors, a 14-foot ceiling with crown molding and a built-in gas log fireplace that combines the best of modern and classic design features.

The kitchen is one of the most interesting rooms in the house because of its cabinetry, large ceiling and open feel. The room has hardwood floors but a kitchen island has been placed in the middle of the space with terra cotta tile beneath it.

White pickled oak cabinetry contrasts well with the terra cotta-colored counter tops and walls. The kitchen features appliances like a smooth-top range and side-by-side refrigerator with indoor drink and ice dispenser. Recessed lighting in the ceiling, two large windows, open soffits above the cabinetry and custom-built curio shelves are other added touches that give this room an open feel.

Adding even more charm is a nearby sun room that also shares the warm terra cotta tile floors. A glass door exits to the private back yard. The yard's privacy is maintained through the placement of evergreens and a large, draping willow tree. Though the patio itself is concrete, flagstone walkways to the front yard and throughout the back yard give the space a woodsy charm.

This house has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Each of the bedrooms has plenty of natural light and closet space. The master bedroom features a ceiling with inset lighting and a white and brass ceiling fan. Hardwood floors and a pleasant color palette give the room a restful feel. The master bath has a whirlpool tub with a large window above it. The cabinetry in the bathroom also is pickled white oak. A step-in shower and separated toilet area are other aspects of this master suite.

Along with a two-car garage, this house has an unfinished basement, though stud walls are in place for room divisions.

The house is located in the Alma Schrader Elementary School District. It is currently listed at $225,000, and is available for viewing through Re/Max Realty One, 335-8565.
