Good deed of the week 12/7/08

Pete Poe's longest running volunteer position is his service to the SEMO District Fair board--25 years. Requiring a12 month a year commitment, Poe said, "If I kept track of the time I probably wouldn't do it."

Poe, semi-retired, also volunteers on the Southeast Hospital Foundation board as chairman of special events, the Cape Girardeau Parks Development Foundation, the Missouri Association of Fairs and Festivals and the Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

On the Parks Development Foundation board he said he does everything from putting spaghetti on a plate to fundraising or whatever comes along.

His current stint is helping the United Way set up their Christmas displays and monitoring fundraising thermometers.

"I like people, being around them and working with them. Volunteerism is a way of life. You have to be a friend to have friends."
