It may be cooler than the typical sweltering July weather in Southeast Missouri, but this weekend rock 'n' roll group The Backsliders will bring the heat. The group is performing the last date of what bassist Jason Bonner termed "The Texas Heat Tour" Saturday at Schock's Pub in Scott City. Admission is $3, and concertgoers get a free CD with entry.

The Cape Girardeau band Moodminder will open the concert at 9 p.m. Moodminder describes itself on MySpace as a "pop garage rock quartet." The group released its debut album, "Sign on the Line," in 2008 and earned the title "Best Local Band" in an online poll conducted by Southeast Missouri State University.

The garage-rock quartet will be followed by a set from Rockface Barband.

The trio of Rockface Barband -- Jeff Bell on guitar and vocals, Matt Sanders on bass and Ben Grayson on drums -- combine original rock tunes with cover songs drawn from influences including Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and more.

The power rock trio is most noted for its high-energy performances in Cape Girardeau, including playing as a feature act in the 2008 River City Music Festival.

The group recently recorded its first album, expected to be released later this year.

The featured band, The Backsliders, will rock Schock's until 1 a.m.

"Chris said bring your socks because we're going to rock them off," said bassist Jason Bonner, laughing.

Jason's brother, Chris Bonner, is the band's guitarist and vocalist. Though Bonner said he and his brother attended high school in Cape Girardeau, The Backsliders come from Dallas.

In addition to the Bonner brothers, singer Kim Pendleton (formerly of Polygram recording artist Vibrolux) fronts the band and Taylor Young (Polyphonic Spree) plays drums. The band draws from a variety of music genres, and its song collection has traces of country, rock, soul, punk and pop.

"We draw from all facets of American music but it's definitely rock 'n' roll."

Many songs spotlight Pendleton, whose soulful yet raspy voice makes for the perfect boozy, bluesy rock tune. Other songs meld the dueling vocals of Pendleton and her male counterpart and husband, Chris Bonner.

Since the group formed in late 2005, it has released three albums, a vinyl record, a live DVD and a Christmas single. The Backsliders most recent album, "Thank You," was released in May as a free download on their website, and Bonner said they will also be giving away free copies of the album at Saturday's show.

"We decided to do this balls-to-the-wall rock album as a free gift," Bonner said. "The biggest thing we're hoping for is landing our music in people's hands who will appreciate it and like rock and roll."
