Scholarships

* The following students received scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2010-2011 school year: Kelly Crites, Eric Fields II and Bethany Schweer, all of Jackson, and Joseph "Alec" Smith of Oak Ridge each received a Regents' scholarship. Zachary Kyle of Cape Girardeau and Trista Guthrie of Jackson each received a Missouri Assessment Program scholarship. Kyle Keith of Jackson and Cody Helderman of Cape Girardeau, each received President's Plus and Missouri Assessment Program scholarships.

* Applications for Missouri Corn Scholarships are available for high school seniors and college juniors. Ten $750 scholarships will be awarded through the Missouri Corn Growers Association and Missouri Corn Merchandising Council. Applicants must be Missouri residents from a farm or rural area and be students of agronomy or agriculture. Applications are available by calling 1-800-827-4181. The deadline to apply is Feb. 12.

* The Alzheimer's Foundation of America is accepting applications for its third annual scholarship competition. The foundation will award a $5,000 scholarship to the winner. The application requires an essay of up to 1,500 words about the effect the disease had on the student's life. Applicants must be entering their freshman year at a four-year university. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15. Applications are available at www.afateens.org.

* Mary Herndon of Jackson received certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is a first-grade teacher at Emerson Elementary School in Cairo, Ill. The certification is based on a performance assessment and takes about three years to complete.

* Nomination forms for the Governor's Humanities Awards are available. The award is given annually by the governor and the Missouri Humanities Council to recognize teachers, community outreach programs and literature. Forms are available at www.mohumanities.org. Nominations will be accepted until Feb. 15 for education, community achievement and literary achievements.
