Volunteer tax preparers needed in Cape Girardeau
The East Missouri Action Agency in Cape Girardeau County is looking for volunteers to provide free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation during the next filing season. The Internal Revenue Service will provide free training and all of the materials needed to prepare basic individual income tax returns After training, volunteers are asked to give at least eight hours per week at the EMAA outreach office in Cape Girardeau. Class will be held the week of Jan. 10 in Park Hills, Mo. Transportation provided. Volunteers need basic computer skills, but accounting experience is not required. Cape Girardeau church plans HalloweenFest
The First Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau will host its Halloweenfest from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the church activities center. The event features a walk-through candy giveaway, games, and hot dogs, chili and soup. The community is invited to the free event. For more information, call 335-6006.

Harlem Ambassadors take on Hometown Heroes
The Harlem Ambassadors vs. the THRIVE Hometown Heroes game will begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School. The event will consist of several ball-handling tricks, high-flying dunks and family comedy. Tickets can be purchased at the Cape Girardeau and Jackson Chambers of Commerce, Country Mart in Jackson and HealthPoint Plaza in Cape Girardeau or at the door. Bethel Assembly offers Halloween alternative
The Bethel Assembly of God Church in Cape Girardeau will host its Fall Fiesta Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. today as a safe alternative for Halloween. There will be games to play for candy prizes, cake walk, drama skits, face painting, crafts, an obstacle course, and free nachos and drinks. This event is free and open to the public. Knights of Columbus hosting sausage breakfast
The Jackson Knights of Columbus will hold a whole hog sausage and pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. on Nov. 7 at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center in Jackson. The cost of admission is a donation at the door. All proceeds will be given to the Jackson Food Pantry.
