The winners of the "Six Pillars of Character" essay and art contest have been announced. This year's winners were Bailey Beussink from St. Vincent de Paul in first place, Laura Bertrand from Immaculate Conception School in second place and Sydney McClintock from St. Vincent de Paul in third place. The Missouri Association for Family and Community Education, along with its national organization and the work of the local Cape Girardeau County FCE members, has promoted the fourth-grade essay contest and artwork contest in public, private and home schools. The theme for this year's contest was "caring," one of the six pillars of character. The contest encourages students to strive for excellence and creativity in reading, writing and drawing skills, and understanding the practice of caring. Sixty-one fourth graders from West Lane Elementary and Immaculate Conception School in Jackson and St. Vincent de Paul School and Jefferson School in Cape Girardeau participated in the art/essay contest.
