Scotty City church starts vacation Bible school today

The Eisleben Lutheran Church of Scott City will host vacation Bible school today through Thursday. This year's theme is "Pandamania: Where God is Wild About You" for children ages 3 through the sixth grade. Dinner is served each night at 5:30 p.m. and vacation Bible school will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Children will learn songs and play games related to daily interactive Bible story lessons among other activities. Tracker celebrates birthday at Discovery Playhouse

The Southeast Missourian Jr.'s mascot Tracker celebrates his 11th birthday from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 5 at Discovery Playhouse. Birthday cake will be served and children can learn how to draw Tracker and make birthday cards. Those who make a donation to local animal shelters as a "Treat for Tracker's Friends" will receive half-price admission.

Downtown Sikeston hosts rodeo arts festival

Historic Downtown Sikeston celebrates Rodeo Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 13 with an arts festival. The Depot Museum hosts the day full of activities, including pony rides, a petty zoo and a Children's Art Walk among many others. Musical performances include Brian Fisk, Anna Catherine Dehart and her band, and Steve Clinton. Rodeo clowns will be in Legion Square Park in the afternoon and a farmers market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is sponsored by US Bank and Missouri Arts Council and is free to the public.

52nd annual Pulaski County Fair planned

The Pulaski County Fair is celebrating its 52nd year with a week full of longtime traditions and new entertainment. The fair kicks off at 2 p.m. Aug. 14 with the annual 17-class Western Horse Show in the free grandstand with the parade following at 5 p.m. Events to expect throughout the week include live music entertainment, a carnival and demolition derby among many others. The Miss Pulaski County Fair Queen Pageant will be Aug. 15 starting at 7 p.m. For more information, call 618-342-6212 or the week of the fair call 618-342-6412.

Health department offers back-to-school shot clinics

Students can get their back to school shots at clinics in Scott County until Aug. 17. The Scott County Health Center and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services are partnering to provide shots available at the Sikeston Office, Oran Baptist Church, Chaffee's Elks and Scott City First Assembly of God Church. Shots are available at the Sikeston office on Aug. 2, Aug. 8, Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Shots are available at the Oran Baptist Church on Aug. 3 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Shots are available at Chaffee Elks on Aug. 17 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. Shots are available at Scott City First Assembly of God Church on Aug. 10 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Miss Heartland Pageant accepting entries

Contestants will compete for the crown in this years Miss Heartland Pageant to be held Sept. 4 in the Dexter High School auditorium. Young girls from the area are invited to enter, the pageant is open for all ages up to 19 years old. The youngest age group will begin at 2 p.m. and the Miss Heartland Pageant for ages 15 to 19 will begin at 5 p.m. Pageant wear is required for all contestants, and the queen in each age category will receive a crown, sash and trophy, and the new Miss Heartland will receive a $100 cash reward. The pageant is sponsored by the Dexter High School Vocal Music Department. Entry forms can be found at www.dailystatesman.com or at the Bunny Patch in downtown Dexter. There is a $20 required entry fee. Contact pageant director Jamie Sepulvado at 270-1145 with questions.

St. Joseph Parish Picnic

For all the kettle cooked beef and fried chicken you can eat, join St. Joseph Parish at a picnic on Sept. 3 in Apple Creek, Mo. The picnic starts at 2 p.m. and food will be served until 7 p.m. Other food served includes hamburgers, fish, ice cream and beer. Carry-out is available upon request. Children ages 6 to 12 cost $4 and adults cost $8. Activities available include bingo in an air-conditioned hall, a raffle and numerous games. Dancing under the pavilion will go late into the night with musical performances by Doug and Mitch.
