Legion Post 158 to host Memorial Day service

A Memorial Day service sponsored by the American Legion Post 158 of Jackson and its auxiliary will be held on Monday. The Jackson Municipal Band will perform patriotic music beginning at 9 a.m. to kick off the ceremony. The event will be held at the entrance of the Jackson City Cemetery on South High Street in front of the Jackson Frozen Food Locker. Kenneth Bender will be the guest speaker. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an aerial gunner on a B-29 Superfortress, completing 22 combat missions over Japan. Following the service, the American Legion Auxiliary will serve a complimentary continental breakfast at American Legion Post 158. The public is invited to attend. Zion Methodist Church hosting beach party

The beach is coming to Zion United Methodist Church three miles west of Gordonville. Sonsurf Vacation Bible School, for children age 2 to grade six, begins with a meal from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and activities until 8 p.m. May 30 to June 2. Sunday night will start at 4 p.m. with a family supper served right off the grill at 6:30 p.m. Adult Bible study will be offered each evening for parents and grandparents, who bring their kids and would like to stay while their kids are enjoying Sonsurf. This Bible Study is open to all adults who would like to participate in a five-night Bible study. Nursery will be provided. 17th annual Oran Car Show set for Saturday

The 17th annual Oran Car Show will be held Saturday at the Tilles Memorial City Park on Greer Street in Oran, Mo. Check in begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. At 4 p.m., trophies will be awarded for three places in 52 classes. For more information, call Ed Evans at 573-275-3310.

Church member Rebecca Kehe came back from spending 18 months in Korea. During that time she did a summer short-term mission trip to the Lutheran School in Taiwan. She has offered to lead a Bible class on Pentecost at 9:15 a.m. and 10:35 a.m. today. She will speak on her experiences in Taiwan and the mission activities of the Lutheran church in Taiwan. Event will showcase local quilters

The Alexander County Tourism Group will host "Country Quilts and Memories" at Egyptian School on June 2. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and display works by local quilters. It will include a workshop on caring for quilts at 10 a.m. and a portrayal of Harriet Tubman and the relationship of quilts to the Underground Railroad at 12:30 p.m. Donations of $10 will be accepted, which will include a light lunch at 11:30 a.m. At 2 p.m., there will be a recognition of quilts and drawings. Fourth annual Bikers Helping Veterans Ride

VFW Post 4282 and the Men's Auxiliary, Perryville, Mo., are hosting the Fourth annual Bikers Helping Veterans Ride for Marian Cliff Manor from 10 a.m. to noon June 3. Sign up is from 10 a.m. to noon and everybody will leave at noon from VFW. No alcohol permitted on the premises of Marian Cliff Manor. Food and music will be provided. Mass of thanksgiving with Father Bertrand

Father Vincent Bertrand, a priest and canon lawyer of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau in southern Missouri, is inviting all friends to a mass of thanksgiving at St. Agnes Cathedral at 11:30 a.m. June 3 in Springfield, Mo. The mass will be celebrated by Bishop John Leibrecht with Father Bertrand, brother priests, family and friends, and there will be reception following the service in the parish center.

Pleasant Hill Day Celebration today

The annual Pleasant Hill Day Celebration will be held Sunday, May 27. The old bell will announce morning worship at 11 a.m. with David Schaffner as guest speaker. Trudy Lee, guest soloist, and Carolyn Thompson, organist, will provide special music. Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association Board President Joe Mathews will speak of current projects. Bring covered dishes to share during "dinner on the grounds" following the service. Drinks will be provided. Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, established in 1838, is located on County Road 541 near Fruitland. A goal for this year is to add more information to the website http://pleasanthillcemeterymo.com and provide more ways to share historical detail about the Church, cemetery, and ongoing activities.
