If the American spirit is defined as a combination of patriotism, service and faith, then Walt and Norma Wildman are the embodiments of this ideal. As a young man, Walt joined the United States Air Force. After fulfilling his enlistment, he entered the civilian world with a strong commitment to using his gifts and abilities to benefit others. While Walt worked publicly with a variety of organizations, his wife, Norma, provided support and encouragement behind the scenes, often working alongside him at organizational events. Together they have labored tirelessly to improve Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area. While investing their time in community agencies and religious ministries, they have sought to improve the lives of people who are often marginalized and neglected. Whether fighting for inclusion of those with physical or mental limitations, providing opportunities for young people to build strong characters or working to strengthen the region's economy, the Wildmans have put aside personal gain for the greater good. At a time of their lives when many are putting their own self-interests first, Walt and Norma have chosen to use their many and varied skills at local not-for-profit agencies. The Wildmans' love for God and country is unquestionable, evident in every detail of their life and even represented in their home decor. It is a great privilege to nominate Walt and Norma Wildman for this recognition, and an even greater privilege to be able to count them as friends.
