'Coffee Cantata' to be performed at Southeast

Johann Sebastian Bach's "Coffee Cantata" will be performed at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The cantata is the comical tale of a father who is trying to convince his daughter to give up drinking coffee. Scenes from Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and "The Magic Flute," and Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" also will be performed. All scenes will be in English. Southeast bands present 'Them Bones'

"Them Bones" will be presented by the Southeast Wind Symphony and Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. This program, presented by the brass, percussion and woodwind students of Southeast's Department of Music, will feature trombone soloists and trombone musical styles. Southeast's Guitar Ensemble to perform

The Southeast Guitar Ensemble will perform the "Spring Guitar Ensemble" concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The concert features a variety of solo pieces and works written for guitar ensemble. The guitar ensemble consists of Jacob Seyer of Scott City, Jake Tropf of Advance, Mo., John Walker of Ballwin, Mo., and Tiffany McKinney of Spencer, Ind. This concert is free and open to the public.

Central choirs to present pop concert

Cape Girardeau Central High School choirs will present "Pop Concert 2013 – We Are Young" at 7 p.m. May 3 and 4 at the Kinder Performance Hall at Central High School. The show will consist of singing and dancing to pop tunes from various decades, and will include large group numbers, as well as solos and small acts by the students. Fashion Friday comes to downtown Cape

Fashion Friday, a collaborative effort to celebrate fashion, support shopping and highlight local businesses, will be May 3 in downtown Cape Girardeau. Participating retail stores will provide discounts and giveaways and will host mini-events, including live mannequins, photographers, jewelry design presentations and local fashion designer showcases. The current lineup of Fashion Friday retailers includes Pastimes Antiques, Stash, Somewhere in Time Antiques, Reruns, Annie Laurie's Antiques, C.P. McGinty Jewelers, Philanthropy and Sloan + Themis. Events begin at opening of business and last until 5 p.m., with some stores extending their mini-events into the evening. Faculty Exhibition to open in Crisp Museum

The "Biannual Faculty Exhibition" will open May 3 in the Crisp Museum at the River Campus with an opening reception from 4 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through June 23. Ceramics, paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and multimedia works by Southeast's Department of Art faculty members will be on display at the Crisp Museum, located in the Cultural Arts Center. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday through May 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday beginning May 13, and 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends. Percussion ensemble entertains at Bedell

The Southeast Missouri State University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Shane Mizicko, will present the "Percussion Pops Family Concert" at 10:30 a.m. May 4 in the Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. The concert is geared toward families with young children and will last approximately one hour. A $1 donation is suggested for admission for those ages 6 and older. Modeled after the ensemble's "Family Holiday Concert," this program will include music and slideshows from popular movies such as "Aladdin," "The Little Mermaid," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Harry Potter," "Madagascar" and "The Lion King." Before the concert, complimentary face painting will be available, and balloons will be provided after the concert.

8th District art competition on display

A reception for the 27th annual 8th Congressional District High School Art Competition will be from 5 to 9 p.m. May 3 at the Southeast Missouri Arts Council, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. This exhibit, with visual art pieces by high school-aged students living within Missouri's 8th District, will be on display until May 25. Students submit entries to their representatives' offices, and panels of local artists in each district select the winning entries, which are displayed for one year at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. The grand prize winner this year will receive an award and two ticket vouchers from Southwest Airlines to attend the reception for the National Congressional Art Competition in Washington. Ten finalists also will be named at the reception.

'Keep Baker Beautiful Day' set for Saturday

PATTERSON, Mo. -- The public is invited to spend the day outdoors and help one of Missouri's state parks at "Keep Baker Beautiful Day" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4 at Sam A. Baker State Park. Volunteers of all ages are invited to this event that recognizes both Earth Day and Missouri Beautification Month by getting the park in shape for the upcoming summer season. Volunteers will receive a free picnic lunch and a one-night camping coupon per family to be used at a later date. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and to bring a pair of work gloves and drinking water. Those wanting to participate need to register by Thursday. Sam A.
