Crisp Museum to host archaeological conference

The Crisp Museum at the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University will be the site of the 2013 Mississippian Archaeological Conference at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, July 20. The conference is open to the public with on-site registration available from 8 to 8:40 a.m. The registration fee is $5. Presentations will be held at 15-minute intervals and will cover the following sites: Eaker and Manley-Usrey in Arkansas; Kincaid, East St. Louis, the East Palisade, West Plaza and previously unknown mounds at Cahokia in Illinois; Sugarloaf Mound; and south Cape Girardeau in Missouri. A variety of topics will be addressed, including architecture, religion, iconography, hairstyles, shell cup effigies, ceramic beakers, lithics, solar eclipses, preservation and more. Poster presentations on exotic raw materials, projectile points and pottery design motifs will be on display. Magic show to benefit Safe House For Women

The Gillam Family Illusions will perform their signature magic show at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Cape Central Junior High Auditorium. This family-friendly event is appropriate for all ages and will benefit the Safe House for Women. The Gillam Family has been performing magic and illusion shows around the country for two decades. Their high-energy, fun-filled, audience-driven show is sure to be a family favorite. Tickets are available at the Safe House for Women Thrift Store at 230 N. Spring St. in Cape Girardeau, online at semosafehouse.org and at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Special rates for groups of 20 or more. Cape Bible Chapel to host Vacation Bible School

Cape Bible Chapel will be hosting Kingdom Rock Vacation Bible School from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. tomorrow through Friday. Parents can register children the morning of vacation bible school or download a registration form from the Chapel website at capebiblechapel.org. The form can be brought to the Chapel office. Cape Girardeau Pro-life Benefit Dinner

The Cape Girardeau Pro-Life Benefit Dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson. The program will feature Gordon Douglas, a comedian who weaves the things he has learned from the ordinary and often painful events in his life to offer the gift of encouragement. There is no registration fee to attend the event but reservations must be made in advance. USS Long Beach Reunion

The USS Long beach CGN-9 Association will have its 20th Ships Reunion from Sept. 9 through 15 in Boise, Idaho. The Boise Hotel and Conference Center at 3300 S. Yale Ave. will be the site for the reunion. Attendees should make their reservations by calling 855-611-1999 for a special rate of $89 per night, taxes included. DVD available to help parents of children who stutter

A DVD, "Stuttering and Your Child: Help for Parents" is available at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, Jackson Public Library and the Riverside Regional Library in English and Spanish to help parents detect stuttering and take action toward helping their child. Produced by the nonprofit Suttering Foundation, the film describes what kinds of stuttering young children may exhibit, how parents can help at home and the role of a speech pathologist in evaluating and treating children who stutter.
