St. Mary services return to sanctuary

Cathedral of St. Mary of the Annunciation will have services in the church beginning today. Services had been in the school gym while the church was being refurbished.

The Holy Week schedule is as follows: 7, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. today; Chrism Mass at 7 p.m. Monday; Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7 p.m. Thursday; Good Friday at 1 and 7 p.m.; Easter Vigil at 7 p.m. Saturday; and Easter Masses at 7, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The parish Easter egg hunt will follow the 10:30 Mass Easter Sunday. Held in the green fenced area behind the church and school, it is for children in fourth grade and younger.Runs to raise funds for Backstoppers

The inaugural Hero's Dash for Backstoppers, scheduled Saturday in Shawnee Park, 1157 West End Blvd. in Cape Girardeau, will feature both a 5K and 10K race, a half-marathon and a one-mile family fun run. The flat, paved course is primarily on the LaCroix Recreational Trail.

The half-marathon starts at 7:30 a.m., 10K at 7:45 a.m., 5k at 8 a.m. and the one-mile run at 9:30 a.m. Runners are asked to arrive at least an hour early to pick up information packets. Runners will receive a T-shirt and finisher's medal.

Entry fees vary.

The event is a fundraiser for Backstoppers, a St. Louis area charity that provides financial and emotional support to the families of public safety workers who have died while on duty. The organization makes mortgage and car payments, pays off debt, and defrays the expense of higher education. In addition, each family gets a "friend of the family" volunteer to stay in touch.

Perryville sets home brew competition

A home brew block party will be from noon to 4 p.m. May 17 on the downtown square in Perryville, Mo.

The event is presented by the town's Downtown Revitalization committee and sponsored by Mary Jane Burgers and Brew in Perryville, John a Huber Brewing Co. in Fruitland and the SEMO Hop Heads home brew club.

There is no cost to enter homemade beer and wine in the competition; deadline for entry is May 9. Cost for attendees is $10 for a wristband that serves a ticket to allow sampling the entries and a souvenir sampling cup. Entered beer and wine will be judged before the event, with winners announced at 3 p.m. A people's choice award also will be given, based on voting the day of the event.

The band Big Ticket will perform.

Church starts Saturday night services

First Baptist Church of Scott City on April 26 will begin Saturday evening services at 5 p.m.

The church's Sunday services are Sunday school at 9:45 a.m., church at 10:45 a.m., children's dinner at 5:30 p.m., and church at 6 p.m. There also is a service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Wine festival slated

The Community Counseling Center Foundation will hold the Annual Community Benefit Wine Festival at the Bavarian Halle in Fruitland from 6 to 9 p.m. April 25. Twelve Missouri wineries will have wine available for sampling and purchase.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Admission includes a souvenir wineglass, wine samples, food donated by local restaurants and live music.

Proceeds will benefit the Community Counseling Center to provide programs and services to children, adults and families dealing with mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. The center is a private, not-for-profit mental health center serving the Missouri counties of Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Madison, Ste. Genevieve and Perry.

Restaurant hop scheduled April 22

Twelve Cape Girardeau restaurants and businesses will participate April 22 in a restaurant hop to benefit Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Theatre and Dance. The Theatre and Dance Society, host of the event, will use proceeds to fund the annual Senior Showcase May 9 and 10 and its summer Theatre and Dance Academy June 2 to 6 and June 9 to 13.

The event, from 5 to 8 p.m., includes the following restaurants:

BG's Deli, My Daddy's Cheesecake, Marco's Pizza, PrimoVino!, The Bel Air Grill, Mississippi Mutts, Jimmy John's, Andy's Frozen Custard, Cup'n'Cork, Saffron Bistro, Imo's Pizza and Burrito-Ville. Each eatery will serve a signature item, and participants can choose to go to any or all of venues in the three-hour time span.
