We Can Weekend slated

The annual We Can Weekend retreat for cancer patients and their families, sponsored by the Southeast Cancer Center, will be May 30 through June 1 at YMCA of the Ozarks near Potosi, Missouri.

The retreat is held at the Sunnen Center, bordering Sunnen Lake.

There is a requested $50 registration fee per family, which includes the cost of lodging and meals. The fee is refunded shortly after the conclusion of the weekend.

Free hearing screenings offered

In honor of May being Better Hearing and Speech Month, MediCenter Pharmacy in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will be offering free hearing screenings.

Miracle Ear will provid screenings from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the Cape Girardeau pharmacy location, 465 S. Mount Auburn Road, Suite 101. It will provide screenings at the Jackson MediCenter from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. Those interested in a screening are encouraged to stop in to either pharmacy at their convenience; no appointments will be necessary.

Library program guides available

A guide outlining summer programs at the Cape Girardeau Public Library are available at the library, 711 N. Clark Ave.

The 36-page guide describes reading clubs, literary events, tutoring opportunities, book fairs, art instruction, puppet shows, performances, writers' support groups, computer classes and other activities scheduled in June, July and August. Programs are arranged chronologically and also sorted by age groups.

The library is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Collecting fans for Salvation Army

MediCenter Pharmacy in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will collect fan donations for the Salvation Army. May 23 is National Heat Safety Day; MediCenter Pharmacy and Gentiva Home Health would like to promote heat safety awareness. Fans may be dropped off during regular business hours at either the Cape Girardeau or Jackson MediCenter Pharmacies.

Donations will be accepted 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at 465 S. Mount Auburn Road, Suite 101, in Cape Girardeau and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 200 W. Washington St. in Jackson.

Individuals donating fans will receive a gift of appreciation provided by MediCenter Pharmacy and Gentiva Home Health.

Young Life annual garage sale scheduled

The annual garage sale hosted by Young Life will start at 6 a.m. May 31 at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Benefit golf tournament scheduled

The Young Life 22nd annual golf classic will be June 16 at Dalhousie golf course.

High school registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a 8 a.m. tee off. Adult registration is at 11 a.m., with lunch at 11:30 a.m. catered by My Daddy's Cheesecake. Proceeds from the tourney benefit Young Life. More information is available by calling 573-579-6444 or visiting ylgolfclassic.com.

Cape Girardeau Extension offers scholarship

The University of Missouri Cape Girardeau County Extension Council is offering a scholarship for interested college students. Application forms are available online at extension.missouri.edu/capegirardeau or by picking up a form at the extension office, 684 West Jackson Trail.

Applicants must be a Cape Girardeau County resident or have graduated from an adjoining school district while living in Cape County or have a general education degree. Students must have completed a minimum of 60 hours of college level course work toward an undergraduate degree and enrolled in a four-year degree program. The degrees must be in one of the following categories: agriculture, human developmental sciences, youth development or business. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

One cash scholarship of $200 will be paid directly to the recipient.

Applications are due on June 16.

Genealogical group to hear about Civil War

The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. May 27 at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center at 112 E. Washington St. in Jackson.

Mike Shain, former KFVS-12 personality, will give a presentation on the Civil War in Southeast Missouri. The archive center will be open at 6:30 p.m. for members to use the library for research.

The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society meets bimonthly on the fourth Tuesday. Nonmembers are welcome at all meetings. Membership is $10 per year.

Dog walk to benefit paralyzed teen

A dog walk to benefit Alex Fraser, a boy left partially paralyzed after a March 17 swimming accident, will be at 10 a.m., May 31 at Busch Pet Products, 1720 Kingsway Drive, Suite 105, in Cape Girardeau. Alex's father, Mike Fraser, is a Cape Girardeau native and has family in the area.

A $30 donation includes the walk, an Alex's Angels t-shirt and a goody bag. Funds raised will benefit the Alex Fraser Supplemental Needs Trust Fund.
