Scholarships

* Aimee Lathum of Scott City was awarded the 2014 Ruth A. Buckhannon Memorial RN scholarship May 18 at the Scott City High School commencement. Lathum is the daughter of John and Cynthia Lathum of Scott City, according to a news release from the scholarship foundation. She will attend Southeast Missouri State University this fall and has been accepted into the nursing program at Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing in Cape Girardeau for the 2016 class, the release said. This is the eighth year for the annual $4,000 scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior of a Scott County public high school planning to become a registered nurse, according to the release.

* The following local students received scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2014-2015 academic year: Sarah Cleaver, Bailey Bliss and Michael Perez of Cape Girardeau, Jacquelyn Kiefer and Joshua Friedrich of Jackson, Jacob Koenig of Burfordville, Whitney Welker of Patton, Missouri, Madison Green of Sikeston, Missouri, and Tyler Holshouser of Tamms, Illinois.

* The following area students were awarded $1,000 scholarships by Citizens Electric Corporation: Michaela Cavins of Perryville High School, daughter of Amber Cavins and Eric Hunt; Breanne Etzold of Saxony Lutheran High School, daughter of Brian and Brenda Etzold; Alexis Engelhart of Jackson High School, daughter of Paul and Carol Engelhart; Kevin Mattingly of St. Vincent de Paul High School, son of Mark and Maureen Mattingly; and Jannell Myers of Oak Ridge High School, daughter of Teresa Myers.

Awards and achievements

* Brock Murphy of Jackson earned the 2013 American Quarter Horse Association Youth Reining Year-End High-Point title.

Murphy showed the American quarter horse Wimpys Little Olena. Mariann Harrington and Joe Prause of Cabot, Arkansas, now own the horse. The 2005 chestnut gelding, sired by Wimpys Little Step and out of Stolmysurprise, was bred by James Irwin of Sunbury, Ohio.

Murphy will be honored at the 2014 Built Ford Tough American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show on Aug. 4 at the fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, where he will receive a specially-designed trophy and a handmade Montana Silversmiths belt buckle, a news release said.

"The American Quarter Horse and the American Quarter Horse Association have been a big part of my family's life for generations. It is part of our heritage. For that reason, winning the high-point award is particularly gratifying. It was a long haul, but I had lots of great help along the way -- from AQHA professional horseman Jon Barry of Advance to my parents and to my grandparents on both sides of the family. They are my biggest fans, and I am grateful for all of their support," Murphy said in an email to the Southeast Missourian.

* Jennifer Peikert, a sophomore at Culver-Stockton College majoring in theater from Marble Hill, Missouri, received the Dramatics Award during the annual Honors Day Convocation on May 13.

* FAYETTE, Mo. -- Central Methodist University announced its Academic Achievement Award recipients for the Spring 2014 term, they include Krista Cartwright and Jennifer Myracle of Cape Girardeau; Karen McCall of Jackson; Sarah Lincoln of Glenallen, Missouri; Valerie Carlson of Patton, Missouri; and Amanda Byrd and Brenda McKown of Sikeston, Missouri. To earn the recognition from CMU's College of Graduate and Extended Studies, the student must be enrolled full time and have earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the semester. Students also must possess at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average at CMU.

Graduates

Brianna Ziegler

* Brianna N. Ziegler of Gordonville graduated summa cum laud with a bachelor's degree in social work from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. The daughter of Kevin and Sheila Ziegler, Brianna received the Outstanding Senior of Student Association of Social Workers award and is employed by the St. Louis Regional Psychiatric Stabilization Center.

* Tyler Davis received a bachelor's degree in agricultural and consumer economics at the May 2014 commencement exercises at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. A 2010 graduate of Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Illinois, Tyler is the son of Marty Davis of Jonesboro, Illinois, and Sherry Rennae Owen of Winchester, Kentucky.

Ashly Ducharme

* Dr. Ashly Ducharme recently graduated with a doctoral degree in osteopathic medicine from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Ducharme, the daughter of Fred and Kathy Ducharme of Cape Girardeau, will be completing her residency at Detroit Medical Center in Michigan. Ducharme is a 2006 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and a 2010 graduate of the University of Missouri.

* Jeffrey Douglas of Jackson received a master of education degree in program higher education and student affairs administration within the Graduate College of the University of Vermont.

* The following area students graduated from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, during commencement exercises May 17 in Park Hills, Missouri: Michelle Carter, bachelor of science in nursing, and Krista Cartwright, bachelor of science in nursing, both of Cape Girardeau. Christen Clary of Jackson, bachelor of science in nursing. Sarah Lincoln of Glenallen, Missouri, bachelor of science in elementary education. Sabrina Doublin of Patton, Missouri, master of education. * DEKALB, Ill. -- Samantha Coleman of Jonesboro, Illinois, received a bachelor of science degree from the College of Health and Human Sciences at Northern Illinois University.
