Charlie Herbst of Cape Girardeau recently was presented with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest recognition a Boy Scout council awards to Scouting volunteers.

Recognizing service that impacts the lives of youths and outstanding contributions to Scouting, 24 awards were given in 2014 from a pool of more than 12,000 Greater St. Louis Area Council volunteers.

An Eagle Scout, Herbst has served Scouting for nearly 25 years as an adult volunteer and previously was recognized with the Shawnee District Award of Merit and the Unit Leader Award of Merit. He currently serves as scoutmaster of Troop 2 in Cape Girardeau and as advancement chairman of the Shawnee District.

Herbst served eight years on the Cape Girardeau City Council. In 2012, he was recognized for service to youth in Eastern Missouri with the Henning's Circle Promise Award by Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri. He also has received the God and service award for his dedication and work at Grace United Methodist Church.
