Awards and achievements

* Breda Crank and Jennifer Myracle, both of Cape Girardeau, and Valerie Carlson of Patton, Missouri, were given Academic Achievement Awards for the summer session at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. To earn the recognition from CMU's College of Graduate and Extended Studies, students must be enrolled full time and have earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the semester and have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average.

* The Jackson Knights of Columbus recently presented scholarships to area graduating high school seniors at their annual banquet. The Jackson Knights of Columbus sponsor scholarships every year to the four area high schools. This year's recipients are Kathryn Krydynski, graduate of Jackson High School, daughter of Tom and Susan Krydynski; Zachary Maudie, graduate of Jackson High School, son of David and Carol Maudie; Shelby Beussink, graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, daughter of John and Lisa Beussink; Katherine Sellers, graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, daughter of Alan and Kim Sellers; Adam Pleimann, graduate of Oak Ridge High School, son of Steve and Tammy Pleimann; and Zach Beal, graduate of Jackson High School, son of Brad and Paula Beal.

* The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary recently presented scholarships to area graduating seniors at its annual banquet. This year's recipients are Teresa Mier, graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, daughter of Tony Mier and Ruth Ann Hester; and Alex Wikel, graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, son of Dave and Donna Wikel.

Lucy Kunz

* Lucy Kunz, daughter of Betsy and John Kunz and a 2014 Jackson High School graduate, has been awarded the Chapter BI, Missouri PEO Anniversary Scholarship. Kunz has demonstrated success in academics, strong leadership qualities, and a commitment to service, the group said in a news release. Throughout high school, she was involved in many activities at school and church, and volunteered at Hope Children's Home in Jackson. Kunz plans to pursue a career in education as a high school English teacher. This fall, she will begin her freshman year at the University of Missouri in Columbia. In celebration of its centennial in March of 2011, the chapter established the scholarship through the PEO Foundation and awards $500 each year to a girl from Cape Girardeau County who is a high school senior or older.

* Saint Francis Foundation and the Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary awarded health-care scholarships to 23 local students. Each student received $2,000 in scholarships toward a degree in a health-care-related profession. The Saint Francis Healthcare Scholarship Program was created in 1980 and is funded by Saint Francis Foundation and the Saint Francis Auxiliary. The program provides scholarships to college students to encourage participation in health-care careers. Recipients must complete at least one year in an accredited health-care program, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and complete the application and essay requirements by the deadline. They must also live within Saint Francis Medical Center's service area.

* The following students were among 181 graduate students who received degrees during spring commencement exercises May 17 at Southeast Missouri State University.
