1. Re-purposed and vintage decorations. Shoppers are buying parts and pieces to build their own decorations, say Amy Beussink and Janey Foust of Cobblestone Corner in Jackson. Vintage ornaments, old toys and costume jewelry can all be re-purposed in your holiday decor while adding a touch of nostalgia.

"With vintage ornaments, try adding an elegant, romantic look to it by adding strings of pearls as garlands and using other costume jewelry as ornaments," suggests Lisa Walker, co-owner of High Street Station in uptown Jackson.

2. Texture. Burlap has been a huge decor trend for the past few years, but the idea of texture has reached beyond burlap, incorporating tin, sisal, jute, wood and other natural items, say Beussink and Foust.

3. Shine and shimmer. "Metallic shine -- gold and silver -- grabs attention and does not go out of style," says Beussink. "A current trend is for these items to be large and oversized."

Red, silver and champagne has been a popular color combination, adds Kathy Knaup of Knaup Floral Inc. in Cape Girardeau.

4. Bold colors. Think deeper than the traditional red and green -- bold colors like burgundy, deep gold, cranberry and hunter green are being used more in holiday decor, say Beussink and Foust. Emerald green and bright cherry red will always have a place at Christmastime, adds Walker.

5. Smells. "The smells in a home should bring memories of holidays past," says Beussink. "Scented candles, scents for warmers, pine cones, fresh evergreen wreaths and potpourri flesh out the sensory aspects of the holidays."

6. Sprinkle Christmas throughout the house. Why stop with the Christmas tree? Add festive pillowcases to the bedroom, towels to the kitchen, luminaria candles to the windowsills, and so on.

7. Personalized items. Cobblestone Corner can make personalized labels for wine bottles, for example, or order wall art with a family's name. Monogrammed items also can be ordered at Sweet Designs Boutique in Cape Girardeau.

8. Outdoorsy and rustic, especially with birch branches. Knaup says the "woodsy lodge look" is always a big hit, incorporating cardinals, branches, deer, nests, sleds, snow, berries and more. "It's a nice look that can be used through Christmas into the other months," she says.

9. Owls and other critters. Knaup Floral even has a tree decorated in an "Owl Be Home for Christmas" theme. Walker says foxes are also gaining popularity.

10. Patterns. Walker is seeing a lot of plaid and the red and white Nordic look. Chevron is still around, though not as big as in the past couple years.
