Shopping Cape's local art scene

Craig Thomas is an artist and owner of the Black Door Gallery in Cape Girardeau. I told Craig I normally feature apparel and accessories in my column, but this month I wanted to do something a little different.

I am a lover and admirer of all types of art, so I'm excited to share artists in Cape who add to the richness of the city.

I spoke with Craig to learn more about his art and what is new at Black Door.

Q: First off, why the name "Black Door Gallery?"

A: We were given a door from the late 1800s. Instead of going with a pre-hung door, we decided to restore it. It as from the same era as the gallery building -- 1880s German vernacular. The idea was to take the extra time to restore the door, going along the same lines as original art. "Black" is the absence of all color. To me, it means to absorb all -- we take everything in, all types of art.

We've had student art shows from Cape Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University, along with adult art, themed art (artist trading cards), group shows ("Feminine Perspective," "Man Art," and "Cooperative Show") and a national exhibit ("Life Blood" and "The Print Making Show"). We have had three installations. We try to make the space fit the art and the art fit the space.

Q: How long has the gallery been running, and what was the inspiration to start it?

A: We've been open since 2007. It's a dream my wife Elizabeth and I both wanted to do.

Q: What does the gallery offer Cape Girardeau?

A: Trying to give an avenue for local artists to show. Also, we are more accepting of art that might be censored at other venues.

Q: You are open every first Friday, but when is your next installation? What can we expect?

A: Black Door Gallery is open first Fridays and by appointment. We also are open for special exhibits. We are having a half-price sale of our art and art materials from 5 to 9 p.m. this Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Q: What do you look for when choosing pieces to exhibit?

A: We like to show a variety of solo, group and themed shows. Normally (we choose) local artists. But, we've had artists from different parts of the country, and once a mother daughter exhibited from China.
