MLK Day celebration events planned

Several events are planned today and tomorrow in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18.

  • The 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, at St. James AME Church, 516 North St. in Cape Girardeau.
  • The 31st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau. A prayer service will follow at 11:30 a.m.
  • The 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Luncheon Benefit will begin at noon Monday, Jan. 18, at the Salvation Army.
  • The 20th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Gala will start at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the West Park Mall Center Court by JCPenney in Cape Girardeau.

In lieu of an admission fee, attendees are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items, canned goods, toiletries or school supplies.

Spring youth soccer league registration open

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will offer a spring youth soccer league in March and April for children in prekindergarten (at least 4 years old) through the eighth grade level. Children will be able to learn how to play and participate in soccer games.

Children in kindergarten through eighth grade will participate in an eight-game schedule, and the younger age group will have a five-game schedule.

Individual registration is $40 ($25 for prekindergarten) and the deadline is Jan. 31. The late registration deadline is Feb. 5, with a late fee of $10 added after Feb. 1. Registrations can be submitted at the A.C. Brase Arena Building and the Osage Centre in Cape Girardeau. Parents also can register their children online at cityofcape.org/soccer by clicking on the orange "Register Now" button.

Blood drives scheduled

The American Red Cross is on appeal, meaning there is an urgent need for blood donors in the area.

  • 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Mount Auburn Christian Church gym, 930 N. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau.
  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at US Bank, 325 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.
  • 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center, 1080 S. Silver Springs Road in Cape Girardeau.

Blood drives in Perry County include:

  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Perryville Family Church, 125 Perry Plaza in Perryville, Missouri.

  • 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas Kelly High School, 4035 State Highway 77 in Benton, Missouri.
  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Orscheln Farm and Home, 1401 E. Malone Ave. in Sikeston, Missouri.
  • 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at the Clinton Building Community Center, 501 Campanella Drive in Sikeston.

Trivia night slated at St. Joseph

Marriage event scheduled for Jan. 29

The Love Worth Fighting For Marriage Event will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at Cape First Church, 254 S. Silver Springs Road in Cape Girardeau. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the event will feature Kirk Cameron and special musical guest Warren Barfield. General admission tickets are $22.50, with admission for a group of 10 or more at $20 per person. VIP tickets cost $50 and include entrance to the event at 5 p.m., seating in the VIP section, access to a VIP-only autograph session and admission to a pre-event question and answer session with Cameron from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. Overflow general admission for guests to view the event via a closed-circuit television in the event's overflow room will be $12.50. Euchre tournament planned

A euchre tournament will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 418 S. 3rd St. in Chaffee, Missouri. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and tickets for the event cost $10. Food will be available. This event is sponsored by the Daughters of St. Ambrose.

Newspaper tours available for area scouts

The Southeast Missourian will offer the opportunity for area Girl and Boy Scouts to tour its printing facility from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 500 William St. in Cape Girardeau. Tours will be held every 15 minutes, and there must be one adult for every eight children. The tour is open to all Scouts and other school groups. To schedule a tour, call (573) 335-6611.
