High-school students receive scholarships

Dylan Murakami and Jayden Marra of Cape Girardeau, Ryan Mize, Jeremiah McGuire and Olivia Brown of Jackson, Reed Walker of Marble Hill, Missouri, Bella Bowers of Scott City and Caleb Bess of Millersville were awarded the Regents' Scholarship to assist with the cost of attendance at Southeast Missouri State University this fall. Murakami will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Doug and Laura Murakami of Cape Girardeau. Marra will be a 2016 graduate of Cape Central High School and is the daughter of Melissa Marra of Cape Girardeau. Mize will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Paul and Connie Mize of Jackson. McGuire was a fall 2015 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Rick and Terri McGuire of Jackson. Brown will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the daughter of James and Kelley Brown of Jackson. Walker will be a 2016 graduate of Woodland High School and is the son of Jim and Diana Walker of Marble Hill. Bowers will be a 2016 graduate of Scott City High School and is the daughter of Bryan and Heraleen Bowers of Scott City. Bess will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Chris and Chris Bess of Millersville.

Kaleb Ward of Cape Girardeau, Ethan Mirgeaux of Scott City and Brandon Hendrix, Carli Knott, Reese Villagrana and Kacie Walley of Jackson were awarded the Residence Life Leadership Award to assist with the cost of attendance at Southeast Missouri State University this fall. Ward will be a 2016 graduate of Cape Central High School and is the son of Kevin Ward and Ruth Mauk of Cape Girardeau. Mirgeaux will be a 2016 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and is the son of David and Beverly Mirgeaux of Scott City. Hendrix will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Leslie Hendrix of Jackson. Knott will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the daughter of Carl and Deanna Knott of Jackson.

Villagrana will be a 2016 graduate of a homeschool program and is the son of Sam and Dawn Villagrana of Jackson. Walley will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the daughter of Wayne and Sandy Walley of Jackson.

Madison Jones, Melinda Calvin and Joseph Rubach of Jackson, Matthew Burford of Benton, Missouri, and Austin Bock of Uniontown, Missouri, were awarded the University Scholarship to assist with the cost of attendance at Southeast Missouri State University this fall. Jones will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the daughter of Matthew and Lori Jones of Jackson. Calvin will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the daughter of Michelle Calvin of Jackson. Rubach will be a 2016 graduate of Saxony Lutheran High School and is the son of Douglas and Donna Rubach of Jackson. Burford will be a 2016 graduate of Kelly High School and is the son of Lenny and Jane Burford of Benton. Bock will be a 2016 graduate of Saxony Lutheran High School and is the son of Shawn and Kimberly Bock of Uniontown.

Leslie Mata of Jackson was awarded the Education Access Program Merit Award to assist with the cost of attendance at Southeast Missouri State University this fall. Mata will be a 2016 graduate of Jackson High School and is the daughter of Jose and Teresa Mata of Jackson.

Students honored for academic efforts

Danae Essner and Sarah Kitchen of Cape Girardeau were named to the fall 2015 dean's list at Fontbonne University in St. Louis. Emily Todt of Jackson was named to the dean's list for the fall 2015 semester at Rockford University in Rockford, Illinois. Ashley Hoffman of Advance, Missouri, and Margaret Pitt of Jackson were named to the fall 2015 honor roll at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, and Tamyra Williams of Cape Girardeau and Sierra Jones of Jackson were named to the fall 2015 dean's list at Culver-Stockton.

Jackson native to perform in Scotland

Emily Todt of Jackson was invited to perform at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe Aug. 5 to 29 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Todt is among 20 students from the Rockford University performing arts department who will participate in the festival. Rockford University in Rockford, Illinois, was one of four U.S. colleges to receive an invitation to perform at this year's festival.

Advance High School senior selected for state honor

Creighton Miles, a senior at Advance High School in Advance, Missouri, was selected as an "honorable mention" student in the 2016 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri's most outstanding academic students in each year's graduating class. To qualify, each nominated student must meet the criteria of an academic decathlon and have a minimum GPA of 3.750; a minimum ACT score of 29 or SAT score of 1,900; be ranked in the upper 10 percent of their class; have completed upper level courses in mathematics, science, English and foreign language; have an excellent attendance record; and be an exemplary and involved school citizen.
