Fall is on its way

Happy Labor Day weekend! The grills are fired up for the last holiday of summer. The mowing season will be slowing down, and then we will be dealing with leaf management.

The boggy ground finally dried out enough for Teen Challenge to mow the cemetery. We remind those of you paying your respects to loved ones that no glass or shepherd hooks are allowed.

City council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at city hall. The Chaffee Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. this Saturday at the museum.

Golden Agers Bingo sponsored by the Chaffee Nursing Home is at 1 p.m. Thursday. Friday lunch at the senior center will be replaced by their delicious fried chicken dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The public is invited, and there will be music by John Schott Karaoke.

The SEMO District Fair starts Saturday!

City reminders

Concerned resident Bob Burnett says speeding is indeed a problem on Nunn Road, but also on South Main, along with running stop signs. I'm not certain if speed humps would help on Nunn Road or any street. The speed limit in the city is 20 mph. People, slow down!

Meanwhile, it has been brought to our attention by several readers to remind residents not to blow grass clippings into the street, and to pick up limbs, trash and pet droppings. It is amazing that people litter or let their dogs do their business in other people's yards. A city ordinance requires pet owners to have dogs on leashes and to pick up after them. While some only have to look out their windows to see such, others who walk or ride their bikes around town witness it. We applaud those of you who do take pride in your property and our city and show respect for your neighbors.

If you want to be proactive in cleaning up your property, do it now! You also will have the opportunity to do an in-depth cleanup at the end of this month with the citywide yard sale from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. Fall cleanup will happen the following week on your scheduled trash pickup day.

More Elvis trivia

We thank Ron Whitaker for adding to our Elvis trivia. Did any of you see Elvis perform at the B&B Club in Gobler, Missouri, in April 1955? Gobler is southeast of Kennett, Missouri. Before becoming a national phenomenon, Elvis maintained a grueling road schedule in the South. He appeared in Gobler the night after a show in Corinth, Mississippi, and the night before, he appeared at the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Elvis' national television debut was in January 1956 on "The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show" and later, the appearance most of us remember, on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in September of that year.

There are lots of Elvis tribute artists, but who can resist 8-year-old Finley Watkins of Bernie, Missouri, who has been performing since he was 5 years old? Although he impersonates others, he has the Elvis style down with his black pompadour hair, pink blazer and lip curl!

Bring on football season

NFL fans are excited that the regular season is near. Many think preseason games are all about checking out rookies. A rookie will indeed replace Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo after he fractured a vertebra in his lower back in Seattle. Dallas fans ask why Romo was in a preseason game in the first place.

Final thoughts

Remember to tell those special people in your life that you love them -- those three words mean so very much and are so nice to hear.

We wish everyone a safe, fun Labor Day weekend! Email your news to darbuck2@airmail.net or leave a message at (573) 887-6430 or (214) 207-7839.

And then ...

Then there was the NFL quarterback who sat to take a stand during the playing of our national anthem.
