Array of events will honor veterans

Veterans Honor Service set

The 17th annual Veterans Honor Service will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at First Pentecostal Church, 3054 Lexington Ave. in Cape Girardeau.

The service will consist of several components, including music by the FPC Praise Team and soloist Craig Mitchell, speeches, tributes and patriotic displays.

There will be honored guests from several participating military service support groups, including the SAR, DAR, VFW, American Legion, DAV and the Patriot Guard Riders.

There will be a tribute to the branches of service by trumpeter Larry Herron (Army), a flag line by the Patriot Guard Riders, an antique military vehicle display by the SEMO Military Vehicles Group and an MIA tribute and flag ceremony presented by American Legion Post 63.

Larry H. Ferrell, assistant U.S attorney for the eastern district of Missouri, is the speaker for this year's service. For more information, call (573) 335-9291.

KRCU Veterans Day breakfast

Veterans Affairs correspondent and award-winning NPR news correspondent David Aquila "Quil" Lawrence will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day Breakfast on Nov. 11 at VFW Post 3838, 1040 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.

KRCU Radio and the College of Health and Human Services at Southeast Missouri State University are hosting the event from 8 to 10 a.m.

The breakfast is open to all veterans, their families and area community members. A free hot breakfast from Ray's of Kelso will be served at the event.

After the breakfast, Lawrence will speak to Southeast students at 10 a.m. in Glenn Auditorium of Dempster Hall on the Southeast campus.

In conjunction with the event and as a Veterans Day tribute, KRCU has been running a Thank A Veteran campaign in which the station is thanking several veterans a day by announcing their names on air.

Veterans wishing to be recognized may submit their name to krcu.org/veterans.

Veterans Day program at Central Junior High

The program begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the auditorium at Central Junior High School, 205 Caruthers Ave. in Cape Girardeau.

The program will include a presentation of colors by the Boy Scouts, a slideshow of area veterans and a small gift for all veterans in attendance.

Veterans Day ceremony at Capaha Park

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Freedom Corner in Capaha Park at Broadway and West End Boulevard in Cape Girardeau.

Saint Francis to host free screenings

Saint Francis Medical Center will host free heart and health screenings for veterans from 7 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Health and Wellness Center conference rooms at Fitness Plus, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road, Entrance 8.

Veterans Day program at Jackson High School

The program starts at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the auditorium at Jackson High School.

The American Legion color guard and the school choir will be present, and all branches of military service will be honored.

All veterans are invited to a breakfast after the program.

Jackson Veterans Day parade and service

The parade starts at 4 p.m. in front of First Baptist Church in uptown Jackson and will proceed up High Street toward the courthouse, turn left on Main Street, then left on Missouri Street.

The parade will include two bands from Jackson High School and one from Oak Ridge High School, along with the American Legion color guard, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, restored military vehicles and more.

After the parade, a service will be held at New McKendree United Methodist Church, 225 S. High St. in Jackson.

Vietnam veteran Bob Stillwell will be the featured speaker, and all are invited for a free meal after the ceremony.

Scott City Veterans Day program

The program will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the high-school gymnasium in Scott City.

Oran Veterans Day program

Oran High School will host a Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, including a posting of colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, the national anthem, recognition of every veteran in attendance and music from the school band and elementary students.

Winners of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen contests will read their winning essays, and students will read the book "America's White Table."

Kelly High School veterans program

The program will be Friday, Nov. 18.
