Twelve Southeast Missouri State University students will perform in the annual Class Voice III Recital at 7:30 p.m. today in the Shuck Recital Hall at the River Campus, 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau.

This will be the final Class Voice III performance for students and their instructor, Judith Farris, artist in residence and vocal director in the Conservatory of Theatre and Dance at the university.

Farris plans to retire at the end of the university’s 2016-2017 academic year.

“It’s really a goodbye performance, but we’re going to have some fun with some special things this last time,” Farris said in a news release.

The recital will include performances from 12 students and will feature music from several prominent Broadway musicals, including “Rent,” “West Side Story,” “Miss Saigon,” “Evita,” “The Secret Garden” and “Jersey Boys.” Several classic pieces from artists such as Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein also will be featured.

The personal and up-close atmosphere of the recital will allow the students to become more comfortable performing and to gain confidence in front of an audience. Throughout the semester, the students have learned advanced vocal technique and principles for performing.

Since its inception in 2005, the recital has allowed the community a window to view and listen to the progress being made by students in the department.

A 1971 alumna of Southeast, Farris established the recital after joining the university faculty in August 2005.

The performance is free and open to the public.
