Hospitals take part in heart, pneumonia study

Three Southeast Missouri hospitals took part in a study during 2001 that could help patients receive better health care.

The hospitals are St. Francis Medical Center and Southeast Missouri Hospital, both in Cape Girardeau, and Perry County Memorial Hospital in Perryville, Mo. Eighteen hospitals statewide participated in the study.

The study was part of a pilot project that is expected to become a national standard for hospital performance measurement this year. Hospitals reported their experiences with care given to patients with acute myocardial infarction, heart failure and pneumonia. The findings were reported to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

The Missouri hospital study was one of five in the nation and was sponsored by the Missouri Hospital Association and the Missouri Patient Care Review Foundation.
