Co-Op Service Center of Jackson donated $10,000 Saturday, April 20, toward building a Swine Barn at the SEMO District Fairgrounds in Arena Park in Cape Girardeau. The decision to donate came after a presentation from swine exhibitors to the Co-Op board of directors outlining the reasons a swine barn is needed. For many years, a tent housed the swine entries and show ring at the fair. Tents hold a significant amount of heat, which stresses pigs, animals that overheat easily. A committee overseeing the fundraising project hopes to raise enough money for a concrete floor, as well as new pens. The overall results will offer safer shelter for the animals and a more attractive and pleasant experience for spectators and exhibitors. The new barn will benefit 4H and FFA members and open-show exhibitors. The committee hopes to raise the needed funds by Saturday, May 25, in time to enjoy at this year's SEMO District Fair, which will be held Sept. 7 through 14.
