CAPE GIRARDEUA, Mo. -- Terry Moreland of Sikeston has enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard.
Moreland, 17, will serve with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment Program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he will learn basic Army skills and values and become more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.
"I just saw the National Guard as providing me with some good opportunities and benefits for the future," Moreland said. "You get to help your community and your country."
Moreland was recruited by Staff Sgt. Steven Bell of the Missouri Army National Guard's Cape Girardeau office. Moreland is a junior at Kelly High School in Benton. He is scheduled to leave on June 2 for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before returning home for his senior year.
After graduation, he will return to Fort Leonard Wood, where he will attend advanced individual training, where he will train to become a military policeman. Moreland enlisted under the "split ops" option, which allows high school juniors to attend basic before their senior year and AIT after their senior year so as not to interrupt graduation.
"I hope the National Guard will help my career to become a police officer and I take a lot of pride in being in the service," Moreland said.
Moreland is supported in his decision to join the Guard by his mother, Kathy Crammer of Sikeston.
