Southeast Missouri State University students (from left) Beth White, Natalie Metzger and Ryan Paluczak stand by their winning polyp sculpture at West Park Mall on Saturday. Not pictured is Edward Haney. The students created the sculpture as part of a contest sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital to recognize Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. As the winning group, the Polyps to the People team received a $500 cash prize. The winning artists, in their entry, wrote: "Cancer is an ugly word....It's visually unappealing; aesthetically it is repulsive; audibly it's terrifying." The winning sculpture and the other two entries will remain on display at the mall in Cape Girardeau through the end of March.
