On October 9, the Heartland Down Syndrome Association will host the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk. The walk, formerly the Buddy Walk, promotes awareness of and respect, inclusion, and opportunities for individuals of all ages with Down syndrome.

Last year's walk was the first ever in Southeast Missouri, and over 135 walkers participated. The event was organized by Cape Girardeau teen Matthew Jedlinski as his Eagle Scout project. Although the name has changed, this year's event organizers hope to build on the success of this inaugural event with lots of fun in store for everyone. There will be a one-mile walk through beautiful Cape County Park, followed by music and dancing, other entertainment, food, and FUN. New this year will be a poster contest, in which individuals and teams will compete for prizes by submitting posters fitting the event theme.
