CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Spc. Trey Maevers, of Cape Girardeau, recently completed his military training to become a combat engineer for Missouri National Guard's 1138th Engineer Sapper Company in Farmington and Fredericktown.

"I joined the Guard for the training and opportunities to serve my country," said Maevers, who plans to become an officer. "I want to lead Soldiers and defend my country. The Guard can help me do that and be a better person."

He graduated a distinguished honor graduate from one-station unit training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Nov. 18, 2011. He also received the Soldier's Creed Award, the High Physical Training Award, and the Trailblazer Award for his dedication and excellence during training.

"I was honored to receive the recognition for all my hard work during basic training," said Maevers. "This is just a part of being a good Soldier."

Maevers served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

Staff Sgt. Steven Bell, recruiter at the Cape Girardeau armory, said Maevers will be a great asset to his new unit.

"He's one of the most motivated and dedicated Soldiers I've seen," said Bell. "I knew from the first day I met him he would be a leader. He's got a lot of determination to be the best Soldier, and one day officer, he can be."

Maevers will begin serving with his new unit in January 2012.

Maevers is the son of James and Deborah Maevers, of Cape Girardeau. He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Missouri - Columbia.
