Cape River Heritage Museum Receives MCH Grant

The Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) has awarded a grant of $1160.38 to the Cape River Heritage Museum in support of the project, "Heartland Heritage Anthology/Writing about the Home Place Event." The MHC is the only state-wide agency in Missouri devoted exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It has served as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1971.

The grant will support the publication of the third annual issue of the Heartland Heritage Anthology. The first two issues, released in 2010 and 2011, highlighted the work of local authors focusing on the life, culture, humor, and history of Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area. Poets and essayists of all ages are invited to submit their work for the next anthology to be published in November 2012. Deadline for submissions is September 1, 2012. All contributors will be invited to read from their work at a reception on November 30 from 5 to 7 pm. Dr. Craig Albin, an accomplished poet and editor of Elder Mountain: A Journal of Ozarks Studies, will also give a reading during the reception. On the following Saturday morning, December 1, from 10 am to noon, Dr. Albin will conduct a workshop on the topic of "Writing about the Home Place." Anyone interested in reading, writing, and talking about the place they call home is welcome to attend the reception and the workshop. Both events will take place at the museum.

The first Heartland Heritage Anthology is sold out. Copies of Heartland Heritage Anthology 2 are available at $6 at the Cape River Heritage Museum, 538 Independence Street. Writers may submit their work by mail or, preferably, as an e-mail attachment.
