This spring, I placed a shepherd's hook just outside our kitchen window and hung a bird feeder on it. Most every morning we enjoy having breakfast and coffee while watching all the different types of birds that come to have their own morning meal. We've seen sparrows, blackbyrds, tufted titmouse, doves, and Cardinals, just to name a few. One morning as we sat drinking our coffee we were shocked when we saw a red-headed woodpecker who decided to drop by and have a bite to eat. He was gorgeous. After doing a little research I found that more than 200 species of woodpeckers exist, about 45 species live in the United States, and depending on the season seven species can be found in Missouri. The most common woodpeckers found here in Missouri are the Northern Flicker, the Red-headed Woodpecker, the hairy woodpecker,
